Magda Costa Carvalho graduated in Philosophy from the University of Lisbon in 1998; professionalised in Educational Formation in Philosophy, from the University of Lisbon, in 2000; has done ‘Provas Académicas de Aptidão Pedagógica e Capacidade Científica’, at the University of the Azores in 2003 and obtained her PhD in Contemporary Philosophy from the University of the Azores in 2009.
Since 2009, she has been an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, of the University of the Azores. She has taught curricular units in different cycles of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Philosophy, with a special focus on Contemporary Philosophy, Applied Ethics and specially in Philosophy for/with Children and Philosophy of Childhood. Between 2013 and 2016, she coordinated a postgraduate programme in Philosophy for Children (60 ECTS) and since 2016 she has been the Director of the Master’s Program in Philosophy for Children (blended-Learning).
In addition to her role as Master’s Program Director, she has held various academic management positions, such as member of the Scientific Committee, the Pedagogical Committee and the Assembly of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of the Azores. She is currently a member of the Scientific Council of the same Faculty and, since 2016, has been a member of the Ethics Committee of the University of the Azores.
In terms of research, she is an integrated member of NICA: Núcleo Interdisciplinar da Criança e do Adolescente (Interdisciplinary Centre for Children and Adolescents), a research and development unit of the University of the Azores, and is an integrated researcher at the Philosophy Institute of the University of Porto – FIL/00502 (FCT), belonging to the Research Group “Philosophy and Public Space”.
Since 2006, she has carried out various professional training courses in Philosophy for/with Children, with different specialists and organisations: in Switzerland (Pro-Philo), in England (SAPERE), in Mexico (Mexican Federation of Philosophy for Children), in Spain (Centre for Philosophy for Children) and in Brazil (NEFI: Centre for Studies in Philosophy and Childhood, Rio de Janeiro State University).
She is the Principal Investigator of the research Project ‘escuto.te: voices of children between philosophy and politics’ (M1.1.C/C.S./031/2021/01), with the support of the Government of the Azores. Between 2017 and 2022, she was Co-Principal Investigator of the research project ‘AIM: Philosophy for Children and the Dawn of Moral Intuition – Values and Reasons in Rationality and Reasonableness’ (PTDC/FER-FIL/29906/2017), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, in a partnership between IFIL-NOVA (with Dina Medonça as Principal Investigator) and NICA-UAc: Interdisciplinary Centre for Children and Adolescents, at the University of the Azores.
Since 2023, she has been Co-Editor of the journal childhood & philosophy, published by NEFI: Núcleo de Estudos em Filosofias e Infâncias, of the State University of Rio de Janeiro, and by ICPIC: International Council of Philosophical Inquiry with Children.
She is the author and co-author of several publications, including books (as author and editor), book chapters and articles in specialised journals, most recently in the areas of Philosophy for/with Children and Philosophy of Childhood.
